Africa is an important sesame production area in the world, mainly distributed in Sudan, Nigeria, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Uganda. Among them, Sudan is the largest sesame producer and exporter in Africa, with an annual output of about 500,000 tons, accounting for more than 10% of the world's total output. It mainly grows white sesame, which is of excellent quality and is favored by the international market. Nigeria is the second largest producer in Africa, with an annual output of about 400,000 tons, mainly brown sesame, mainly for domestic consumption and export. In recent years, Ethiopia has expanded its sesame planting area, with an annual output of about 300,000 tons, mainly exported to China, the Middle East and Europe.
African sesame planting is mainly carried out by small farmers, relying on natural rainfall and with a low degree of mechanization, so the output is easily affected by climate. However, due to its rich land resources and low labor costs, African sesame has a price advantage in the international market. China is the main importer of African sesame, accounting for more than 60% of its total exports, and it is widely used in edible oil, food processing and pharmaceutical industries.
The 2025 China Sesame Spring Conference was successfully held in Qingdao, attracting representatives from upstream and downstream enterprises, traders and scientific research institutions in the sesame industry chain at home and abroad. The conference focused on the global sesame market supply and demand situation, African production area dynamics, domestic processing technology upgrades and other topics. Industry experts conducted in-depth discussions on sesame import policies, price trends and deep processing applications.
During the conference, many companies reached procurement agreements with African suppliers to further consolidate China-Africa sesame trade cooperation. In addition, the conference also emphasized the importance of improving the research and development of high-value-added products of sesame oil and sesame protein to cope with the growth of domestic market demand. As an important sesame import and processing base in China, Qingdao provided a communication platform for the industry at this conference to help the high-quality development of China's sesame industry.
